Transporting Band Students and Athletes

We’ve often thought about how school buses play a vital role in our country’s education system. Without these familiar yellow buses, most students won’t have a safe, comfortable, and reliable way to get to and from school. To date, school buses transport around 25 million students daily in the United States.

But many people may not have realized that school buses also play a crucial role in off-campus events, such as sports and musical events.

Regarding athletic events, sports teams and student-athletes rely on school buses to transport them to and from games. Just imagine – what would it be like without those yellow buses? Football, basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball teams cannot arrive at their scheduled matches on time. Without these yellow buses, these student-athletes cannot compete. There’s no other safer, more efficient, and more reliable way to get these teams and athletes to off-campus and out-of-town games.

It would be interesting to survey the country’s pro athletes to find out how many of them took the school bus to their games while still in school. Anyone’s guess would be nearly all of them rode the school bus, meaning that school buses played a significant role in shaping their athletic careers.

Many students also participate in musical bands as extracurricular activities or in their school’s scholarship program. Musically gifted students join various bands, such as concert, marching, jazz, or chamber ensemble.

School bands perform in various events. Marching bands, for example, perform at parades, sports events, or intercampus competitions. Concert bands and ensembles usually perform at concert halls during a competition or music festival. Musically talented students go to summer rehearsals or band camps (as they’re often mandatory) to hone their skills in preparing for a competition or big event.

School buses also play an important part in these musical events. While student musicians remain the top priority, many school districts in Pennsylvania also lay down their guidelines for the safe transportation of musical instruments on school buses to and from school and other venues where the students will rehearse or perform.

For instance, many school districts specify that a particular musical instrument must be able to fit on each student’s lap or under the bus seat. They don’t allow instruments to be placed in the aisle, behind the driver’s seat, or taking up any seat designated only for students. These instruments allowed to be taken inside the school bus may include guitars, violins, violas, alto and tenor saxes, trombones, woodwind instruments, trumpets, French horns, and snare drums. Larger, heavier, and bulkier instruments like larger drums, tubas, full-sized cellos, and baritone saxes are not usually allowed inside the bus, and these instruments (and the students carrying them) should be safely transported by other means.

School buses are not mere vehicles transporting students to and from school – they also provide hope for all students. These familiar yellow buses can help these talented students along their future careers – athletic, musical, or any other field they choose.
